Overview

Cancer cell surface antigens are molecules expressed on the surface of cancer cells that can be recognized by the immune system. These antigens can be tumor-specific (TSA) or tumor-associated (TAA) and serve as targets for immunotherapy and diagnostic biomarkers. They play a critical role in immune recognition of cancer cells and can be exploited for targeted therapies like monoclonal antibodies and CAR-T cells. Examples include CD19, EGFR, and integrin β7. Careful selection of target antigens is crucial to minimize off-target toxicity.

Mechanism of action

Binding of antibodies or CAR-T cells to the antigen leading to tumor cell lysis, apoptosis, or growth inhibition. Small molecule inhibitors block the function of specific antigens like growth factor receptors.
