Overview

Cancer susceptibility 18 (CASC18), also known as LOC101929110, is a long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) gene with no known protein coding function. CASC18 has been implicated in the regulation of gene expression in cancer, particularly by acting as a competing endogenous RNA (ceRNA) that sponges microRNAs such as miR-5586-5p, thereby influencing the levels of target genes involved in cell invasion, migration, and the epithelial-mesenchymal transition in cancers like cervical squamous cell carcinoma. CASC18 also demonstrates altered expression in cancer and may serve as a biomarker for disease progression or therapeutic response (for example, its upregulation by capecitabine in colorectal cancer cells).
