Target intelligence / Profile preview

Candida albicans (C. albicans)

Target
C. albicans
Molecular classification
Fungus, Ascomycota, Saccharomycetes
01

Overview

Candida albicans is an adaptable fungal pathogen capable of causing superficial to severe systemic disease when host-microbe balance breaks down due to environmental changes or immune suppression. It is a common commensal fungus that colonizes the oropharyngeal cavity, gastrointestinal and vaginal tract. The various clinical manifestations range from localized, superficial mucocutaneous disorders to invasive diseases that involve multiple organ systems and are life-threatening. C. albicans is commonly used as a model organism for fungal pathogens and grows both as yeast and filamentous cells.

Monilia albicans

Mechanism of action

Azoles: Inhibit ergosterol synthesis; Polyenes: Bind to ergosterol, disrupting cell membrane integrity; Echinocandins: Inhibit β-1,3-glucan synthase, disrupting cell wall synthesis
