Overview

Candida peptide and protein antigens represent a diverse group of molecules located on the fungal cell wall or presented by Major Histocompatibility Complex (MHC) molecules following processing by host immune cells. Key proteins include the Agglutinin-like sequence (Als) family, particularly Als3, and Hyphal wall protein 1 (Hwp1), which are critical for the fungus's ability to adhere to host tissues and form biofilms. These antigens are primary targets for the development of vaccines and monoclonal antibodies aimed at preventing or treating candidiasis, a significant cause of morbidity in immunocompromised individuals. By targeting these surface-exposed or MHC-presented components, therapeutic interventions seek to enhance Th1 and Th17 immune responses, which are essential for controlling fungal proliferation and dissemination. Clinical candidates like the NDV-3A vaccine utilize recombinant versions of these antigens to provide cross-protection against various Candida species and even Staphylococcus aureus.
