Overview

Candida species antigens are a diverse group of molecules located on the fungal cell surface or secreted into the host environment, primarily from species such as Candida albicans (StatPearls, NBK560624). These antigens include structural components like (1,3)-beta-D-glucan and mannan, as well as proteins involved in virulence such as the agglutinin-like sequence (Als) family and secreted aspartyl proteinases (SAPs) (NCBI, PMC3708393). Biologically, they are essential for the fungus to adhere to host tissues, form biofilms, and evade the host immune system (NCBI, PMC3708393). In therapeutic development, these antigens are targeted by vaccines like NDV-3A and monoclonal antibodies like efungumab to provide passive or active immunity (PubMed, 29688281; PubMed, 16307592). Additionally, the detection of these antigens in patient serum, such as the mannan or beta-glucan assays, serves as a critical diagnostic tool for identifying invasive candidiasis (CDC, Laboratory Diagnosis of Candidiasis). Targeting these antigens allows for the disruption of fungal structural integrity and the neutralization of key factors required for infection (PubMed, 29688281).
