Overview

Canine parainfluenza virus (CPIV) antigens, specifically the hemagglutinin-neuraminidase (HN) and fusion (F) glycoproteins, are the primary targets for immunization against canine infectious respiratory disease complex (CIRDC) (Merck Veterinary Manual, 2024). CPIV is a highly contagious paramyxovirus, taxonomically identified as Parainfluenza virus 5 (PIV5), which infects the ciliated epithelium of the canine respiratory tract (ICTV, 2023). The HN protein facilitates viral attachment to sialic acid receptors on host cells, while the F protein enables the viral envelope to fuse with the host cell membrane (UniProt: P04850). Vaccines containing these antigens stimulate the host's immune system to produce neutralizing antibodies that block these entry mechanisms, thereby reducing the severity of clinical signs such as paroxysmal coughing and nasal discharge (AAHA, 2022). While CPIV infection is often self-limiting, its role as a primary pathogen in the kennel cough complex makes its antigens vital for broad-spectrum respiratory protection in veterinary medicine (PubMed: 23536650). Effective vaccination not only protects the individual animal but also reduces viral shedding within populations.
