Overview

Canine parvovirus type 2b (CPV-2b) is a non-enveloped, single-stranded DNA virus virulent in dogs. It is one of several antigenic variants of canine parvovirus type 2, known for causing acute, often hemorrhagic enteritis and, in puppies, sometimes fatal myocarditis. The virus is highly contagious, spreading predominantly by the fecal-oral route, and is resistant to environmental inactivation, persisting on surfaces for months[3][6][7]. Infection is characterized by vomiting, lethargy, fever, and severe diarrhea, occasionally with blood. The pathogenesis centers on the virus’s preference for rapidly dividing cells, particularly those of the gastrointestinal epithelium and hematopoietic tissues, leading to immunosuppression and secondary infections[1][2][4]. There is no direct antiviral treatment; management is supportive, aiming to address dehydration, prevent secondary bacterial infections, and support recovery until the patient’s immune response resolves the infection. Vaccination is highly effective in preventing illness[2][7].
