Overview

Cannabinoid receptor 1 and cannabinoid receptor 2 are members of the G protein-coupled receptor family that mediate the effects of endogenous cannabinoids (anandamide, 2-AG), phytocannabinoids (THC, CBD), and synthetic cannabinoids. Both receptors are present in the skin, with complementary patterns in epidermal keratinocytes, sebaceous glands, hair follicles, mast cells, and immune cells. They regulate skin barrier formation, keratinocyte growth, immune and inflammatory responses, and sebum production. Dysregulation of these receptors is implicated in various dermatological disorders such as atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, acne, and certain tumors. Modulation of these receptors is being explored therapeutically for inflammatory and proliferative skin diseases
