Canopy FGF signaling regulator 1 (CNPY1) is a conserved intracellular protein involved in embryonic developmental processes. It acts as a positive regulator of FGF signaling by assisting in the maturation of the FGFR1 receptor in the endoplasmic reticulum, thus amplifying FGF signals needed for cell clustering, adhesion, and laterality patterning in the early embryo. Its biological importance is demonstrated in zebrafish, where loss of CNPY1 causes clustering defects in forerunner cells and abnormal ciliogenesis, leading to failures in left-right (LR) body axis patterning and cardiac development. The protein is detected in several tissues and has low tissue specificity. CNPY1 serves as a molecular marker for certain cancers but is not currently pursued as a drug target or biomarker in therapeutics.
