Capicua transcriptional repressor pseudogene 17 (CICP17) is an annotated human pseudogene similar in sequence to the functional capicua transcriptional repressor (CIC) gene but does not encode a functional protein product[1][7]. Pseudogenes are evolutionary remnants of genes that have lost their capacity to produce a functional protein due to disabling mutations, frameshifts, or other genomic alterations[7]. While some pseudogenes have been shown to act as regulatory non-coding RNA or to modulate gene expression, there is no published evidence of such a function for CICP17[1][7]. It is not a recognized therapeutic target, nor is it linked to human diseases as a causative gene. CICP17 should not be confused with the functional gene capicua (CIC), which acts as a transcriptional repressor involved in cancer and neurodevelopmental disorders[4][2].
