Capicua transcriptional repressor pseudogene 21 (CICP21)

Target
CICP21
Molecular classification
Pseudogene, Non-coding RNA
01

Overview

Capicua transcriptional repressor pseudogene 21 (CICP21) is a genomic sequence classified as a pseudogene, meaning it has significant sequence similarity to the functional capicua transcriptional repressor (CIC) gene but is non-functional due to acquired mutations or regulatory changes. Pseudogenes such as CICP21 generally do not encode functional proteins but may sometimes produce RNA transcripts that regulate the expression of their parent genes through competitive endogenous RNA mechanisms or the generation of regulatory small RNAs. There is currently no evidence supporting CICP21 as a therapeutic target, druggable receptor, or direct disease biomarker.

Mechanism of action

None applicable. No drugs target CICP21; pseudogene RNAs can potentially influence regulatory networks but CICP21-specific mechanisms have not been described

03

Biological functions

None directly documented for CICP21; pseudogene transcripts can sometimes regulate their parent genes via noncoding RNA mechanisms, such as acting as competitive endogenous RNAs (ceRNAs), antisense transcripts, precursors for small interfering RNAs (siRNAs), or piwi-interacting RNAs (piRNAs)
04

Disease associations

No established direct role in diseasePseudogenes in general may have indirect effects in cancer or gene regulation if transcribed
05

Safety considerations

None known or anticipated, since CICP21 is not targeted by therapies nor proposed as a biomarker
