Overview

Capillary membrane integrity refers to the structural and functional wholeness of the thin endothelial barrier that separates the blood within the capillaries from surrounding tissues, such as the alveolar space in the lungs. This barrier allows for the selective exchange of gases, nutrients, and waste, while preventing leakage of proteins and cells. In the alveolar–capillary unit, integrity is essential for proper gas exchange and prevention of lung fluid accumulation. Pathological loss of capillary membrane integrity leads to increased permeability, leakage of protein-rich fluid, and can result from inflammation, toxic insults, or chronic diseases such as heart failure or pulmonary fibrosis[1][4][5]. Unlike molecular or protein targets, "capillary membrane integrity" is a functional/physiological property and not a discrete druggable molecular entity, making it an inappropriate entry for a therapeutic target database. Limitations: "Capillary membrane integrity" is not a single molecule, receptor, or protein, but rather a physiological property of a tissue structure comprising various molecular components (including endothelial cells, basement membrane, and junctional proteins). Therefore, it does not correspond to a standard drug target and cannot be categorized with molecular specificity as is conventional in drug discovery[1][4][5].
