Overview

CAPS2 antisense RNA 1 (CAPS2-AS1) is a long non-coding RNA transcribed from the antisense strand of the genomic locus neighboring the CAPS2 gene[3]. Antisense RNAs, particularly lncRNAs like CAPS2-AS1, function mainly in regulation of gene expression by interacting with sense transcripts or modulating chromatin state at their loci of origin or distant genomic regions[1]. These RNAs do not encode functional proteins, and their regulatory effects may be mediated via several mechanisms including transcriptional interference, RNA-DNA interactions, and recruitment of chromatin modifiers. While many antisense lncRNAs play roles in cancer and other diseases, there is no disease-specific or drug interaction data for CAPS2-AS1 currently available[3][1]. CAPS2-AS1 should not be confused with the CAPS2 (Calcium-dependent activator protein for secretion 2) protein, which is involved in neurosecretion[4]; CAPS2-AS1 itself does not encode a protein and is not a receptor or enzyme. Antisense lncRNAs as a class are of growing interest in epigenetic gene regulation and as potential (but largely exploratory) therapeutic targets; however, CAPS2-AS1 currently has no established therapeutic or diagnostic use[3][1].

Biological functions

Regulation of gene expression (especially at the transcriptional and post-transcriptional level, often in a sequence-specific manner)Modulation of chromatin structure and epigenetic control (as described for many antisense lncRNAs)

Disease associations

Cancer (many antisense RNAs, including lncRNAs, are implicated in oncogenic processes, but no direct evidence currently links CAPS2-AS1 to specific diseases)Other (Potential involvement in other gene regulatory networks typical of lncRNAs, but specific associations for CAPS2-AS1 are not established)
