Overview

Capsular polysaccharide 5 (CP5) is a specific type of extracellular polysaccharide capsule produced by certain strains of Staphylococcus aureus. It is one of the two most common capsular serotypes found in clinical isolates, the other being CP8. The capsule forms a protective layer around the bacterial cell wall, playing a crucial role in immune evasion and virulence. Because antibodies against CP5 promote opsonophagocytic killing, vaccines or therapies targeting this antigen are under investigation for preventing or treating S. aureus infections.
