Target intelligence / Profile preview
The capsular polysaccharide of Streptococcus pneumoniae serotype 1 (Sp1 CP) is a complex, zwitterionic carbohydrate polymer that constitutes the outermost layer of the serotype 1 pneumococcus. It plays a pivotal role in pathogenesis by inhibiting complement deposition and preventing phagocytosis by host immune cells, thereby facilitating invasive disease (Source: PubMed, PMID: 25852165). Serotype 1 is a major contributor to the global burden of invasive pneumococcal disease, particularly in Africa and Asia, and is known for its high invasive potential (Source: WHO, Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccine Position Paper). As a therapeutic target, Sp1 CP is utilized as an antigenic component in several licensed vaccines, including 23-valent polysaccharide vaccines and various conjugate vaccines like PCV13, PCV15, and PCV20 (Source: FDA, Product Labels). These vaccines function by eliciting serotype-specific antibodies that promote opsonophagocytosis, providing protection against infection (Source: CDC, Epidemiology and Prevention of Vaccine-Preventable Diseases). The unique zwitterionic nature of Sp1 CP is of significant interest in immunology as it can be processed and presented to T-cells via the MHC II pathway, potentially enhancing the immune response compared to purely anionic polysaccharides (Source: PubMed, PMID: 15141215).
