The capsular polysaccharide of Streptococcus pneumoniae serotype 6B is a complex carbohydrate polymer that forms the outermost layer of the bacterium. It serves as a critical virulence factor by shielding the pathogen from the host's immune system, primarily by preventing complement deposition and subsequent phagocytosis by neutrophils and macrophages (Source: PubMed, PMID: 11854167).
