Carbohydrate-binding module family 9 (CBM9) consists of non-catalytic protein domains typically found within larger multimodular enzymes, such as xylanases and cellulases, primarily in bacteria. These modules are characterized by their ability to bind specifically to various carbohydrates, including cellulose and xylan, often showing a preference for the reducing ends of these polysaccharides. Biologically, CBM9 domains serve to tether their associated catalytic enzymes to the substrate, thereby enhancing the efficiency of polysaccharide degradation. CBM9 domains function by increasing the effective concentration of associated catalytic domains (such as xylanases or cellulases) on the surface of complex polysaccharide substrates through high-affinity binding to specific carbohydrate motifs, such as the reducing ends of cellulose or xylan chains.
