Carbohydrate moieties on cell surfaces refer to the sugar chains attached to proteins (glycoproteins) and lipids (glycolipids) that predominantly localize to the extracellular face of the plasma membrane. Collectively, these structures contribute to the formation of the glycocalyx, a carbohydrate-rich coating. These moieties are crucial for cell-cell recognition, adhesion, immune modulation, and signal transduction—acting as molecular signatures that can distinguish cell types and states, mediate attachment to other cells or the extracellular matrix, and interact with pathogens and signaling molecules.
