Carbohydrate polymers, also known as polysaccharides, are complex biomolecules consisting of long chains of monosaccharide units joined by glycosidic bonds (Wikipedia, 2023). They play critical roles in biological systems, serving as primary energy reserves, such as starch and glycogen, and essential structural components, such as cellulose in plants and chitin in fungi (NCBI, 2022). In a pharmacological context, specific carbohydrate polymers are often targeted or utilized; for instance, bacterial peptidoglycan and fungal beta-glucans are key targets for antimicrobial drugs like beta-lactams and echinocandins (PubMed, 2021). Furthermore, glycosaminoglycans like heparin and hyaluronic acid are vital in human physiology for anticoagulation and joint lubrication, respectively (StatPearls, 2023). Because the term encompasses a vast array of chemically distinct molecules, it is generally considered a broad molecular class rather than a single, specific therapeutic target (PubChem, 2024).
