Overview

Carbohydrate sulfotransferase 10 (CHST10) is an enzyme that catalyzes the transfer of sulfate from 3′-phosphoadenylyl sulfate (PAPS) to the C-3 hydroxyl position of terminal glucuronic acid residues on both protein- and lipid-linked oligosaccharides. CHST10 is critically involved in the biosynthesis of the HNK-1 carbohydrate structure, which is widely expressed on neural cell adhesion molecules and plays an essential role in neural development and synaptic plasticity. It is also involved in sulfating steroid hormones, including glucuronidated estrogens and androgs, thus influencing hormonal cycles and fertility. Pathogenic variants in CHST10 have been associated with certain forms of muscular dystrophy (e.g., muscular dystrophy-dystroglycanopathy type A, Walker-Warburg syndrome), suggestive of a role in neuromuscular and neurodevelopmental pathologies. No approved drugs, specific therapeutic ligands, or biomarkers are currently listed for this target in the available sources.
