Carbohydrate sulfotransferase 13 (CHST13) is an enzyme of the sulfotransferase 2 family, predominantly localized to the Golgi membrane, that catalyzes the transfer of sulfate to the C4 hydroxyl of β1,4-linked N-acetylgalactosamine (GalNAc) residues in chondroitin, a principal component of chondroitin sulfate proteoglycans found in cartilage and many cell surfaces and extracellular matrices. This post-translational modification is important for the structural integrity and functions of the extracellular matrix, as well as cell signaling and tissue maintenance. CHST13 specifically transfers sulfate but does not act on dermatan[1][2][6]. Its biological activity supports the biosynthesis of chondroitin sulfate, which is crucial for cartilage formation and cellular communication[1][5]. No known drugs specifically target CHST13, and clinical biomarker or safety information are absent from current databases.
