Overview

Carbohydrate sulfotransferase 6 is a Golgi-localized enzyme encoded by the CHST6 gene. It catalyzes the transfer of a sulfate group to the 6-position of N-acetylglucosamine (GlcNAc) residues in keratan, a glycosaminoglycan critical for the maintenance of corneal transparency. Defects or mutations in CHST6 result in abnormal sulfation patterns in keratan sulfate, leading to macular corneal dystrophy, characterized by progressive vision loss due to corneal clouding. The enzyme primarily acts in keratan sulfate biosynthesis, working with other glycosyltransferases and sulfotransferases to construct the extracellular matrix of the cornea[1][2][3][6].
