Carbon Monoxide Release

Molecular classification
Gasotransmitter, Signaling molecule
01

Overview

Carbon monoxide (CO) is a small, endogenously produced gas that acts as a signaling molecule in the human body. It is primarily generated through the enzymatic degradation of heme by heme oxygenase enzymes. At low physiological levels it plays important roles in vasoregulation and inflammation modulation. CO exerts vasodilatory effects mainly via activation of soluble guanylate cyclase (sGC) and opening potassium channels. The anti-inflammatory effects are attributed to modulation of inflammatory cell signaling and downregulation of pro-inflammatory cytokines. Therapeutic delivery is achieved via Carbon Monoxide-Releasing Molecules (CORMs), compounds that release controlled amounts of CO.
