Overview

CA14P1 is a human pseudogene related to carbonic anhydrase XIV (CA14). Pseudogenes are genomic DNA sequences similar to normal genes but are non-functional; they do not encode an active protein or produce enzyme activity[3]. While CA14 is a membrane-associated, zinc-containing enzyme involved in the reversible hydration of carbon dioxide and acid-base balance, CA14P1 does not encode a functional enzyme, does not participate in biological processes, and is not considered a druggable or therapeutic target[3]. There are no known disease associations, drugs, or mechanisms of action linked to CA14P1. Note: There is often confusion between CA14P1 (a pseudogene, not functionally expressed) and CA14, the bona fide carbonic anhydrase XIV enzyme[1][2][3][5]. The functional enzyme (CA14), not the pseudogene, is the protein coding gene involved in physiological processes and is sometimes a research target for carbonic anhydrase inhibitors. CA14P1 itself is not considered a therapeutic target and has no active biological or pharmacological role.
