Carbonic Anhydrase 6 (CA6) is a secreted zinc-containing enzyme belonging to the alpha-carbonic anhydrase family. It catalyzes the reversible hydration of carbon dioxide and is specifically expressed in serous acinar cells of the parotid and submandibular glands and secreted into saliva. While its precise function in saliva remains unclear, several roles have been proposed, including maintenance of pH homeostasis, protection against dental caries, and involvement in taste perception. Altered expression or function has been linked to diseases such as mammary analogue secretory carcinoma, dental caries, and hypogeusia.
