Carbonic Anhydrase from Schistosoma mansoni (SmCA/SmaBCA)

Target
SmCA/SmaBCA
Molecular classification
Enzyme, Metalloprotein, Carbonic Anhydrase, α-carbonic anhydrase, β-carbonic anhydrase
01

Overview

Carbonic anhydrases (CAs) are metalloenzymes that catalyze the reversible hydration of carbon dioxide. In *Schistosoma mansoni*, a parasitic blood fluke responsible for intestinal schistosomiasis, two classes of CAs have been identified: an α-class CA (SmCA) and a β-class CA (SmaBCA). These enzymes are essential for parasite survival and infectivity. SmCA is highly expressed in the tegument of *S. mansoni* and contributes to pH regulation, ion transport, and evasion of host immune responses. Inhibition of SmCA and SmaBCA is a promising therapeutic strategy for schistosomiasis.
