Carbonic anhydrase I (CA I) is a zinc-containing enzyme that catalyzes the reversible hydration of carbon dioxide (CO2) to bicarbonate (HCO3-) and protons (H+). This reaction is fundamental for maintaining acid-base balance and facilitating CO2 transport. CA I is a member of the alpha class of carbonic anhydrases and is found primarily in erythrocytes. Inhibitors of CA I, such as acetazolamide, are used therapeutically to treat conditions like glaucoma.
