Carbonic Anhydrase II Isoenzyme (CA II)

Target
CA II
Molecular classification
Enzyme, Hydrolase, Metalloenzyme
01

Overview

Carbonic anhydrase II (CA II) is a zinc metalloenzyme that catalyzes the reversible hydration of carbon dioxide. It is crucial for pH regulation, respiration, ion transport, and acid-base balance in tissues. CA II plays key roles in renal bicarbonate reabsorption, bone resorption, and central nervous system pH homeostasis. Deficiency or mutations can cause osteopetrosis with renal tubular acidosis. It is a therapeutic target for conditions like glaucoma, where inhibition reduces intraocular pressure.
