Carbonic anhydrase type II (CA II)

Target
CA II
Molecular classification
Enzyme, Metalloprotein, Carbonic Anhydrase
01

Overview

Carbonic anhydrase type II (CA II) is a zinc-containing enzyme that catalyzes the reversible hydration of carbon dioxide to bicarbonate and protons. It plays a crucial role in pH regulation and CO₂ transport in various tissues. Deficiency or mutations in CA II are associated with carbonic anhydrase II deficiency syndrome, characterized by osteopetrosis, renal tubular acidosis, and cerebral calcification. CA II is also a therapeutic target in glaucoma, hypertension, and other diseases.
