Overview

Carboxymethylcellulose sodium is the sodium salt of carboxymethylcellulose (CMC), a water-soluble, anionic polysaccharide derived from cellulose by carboxymethylation of some of the hydroxyl groups of the glucopyranose monomers[1][4][5][6]. It appears as a white or slightly yellow, odorless, tasteless, hygroscopic powder or fiber that dissolves readily in water to form viscous solutions, acting as a thickening, emulsifying, stabilizing, or film-forming agent. Due to its biocompatibility, non-toxicity, and ability to hydrate and form gels, it is widely used in pharmaceuticals (e.g., as an artificial tear in eye drops, wound dressing, binder in tablets), foods (as a thickener and stabilizer), and numerous industrial applications. It does not have any known intrinsic therapeutic bioactivity and is not a biological molecular target for drugs[1][5][6].
