Overview

Carboxypeptidase A1 (CPA1) is a zinc-dependent metalloprotease enzyme primarily produced in the pancreas. It plays a key role in protein digestion by cleaving C-terminal branched-chain and aromatic amino acids from dietary proteins. It is also involved in zymogen inhibition, being synthesized as an inactive precursor to prevent autodigestion of pancreatic tissue. Mutations in CPA1 have been linked to chronic pancreatitis, and elevated serum levels are observed in pancreatic cancer. Immunohistochemical staining for CPA1 serves as a diagnostic marker for pancreatic acinar cell carcinoma.
