Thrombin Activatable Fibrinolysis Inhibitor (TAFI)

Target
TAFI
Molecular classification
Enzyme, Metallocarboxypeptidase, Zymogen
01

Overview

Thrombin activatable fibrinolysis inhibitor (TAFI) is a plasma enzyme that plays a crucial role in regulating the balance between coagulation and fibrinolysis. It circulates as an inactive zymogen and is activated by thrombin or plasmin. TAFIa functions as a metallocarboxypeptidase that removes C-terminal lysine or arginine residues from peptide substrates, primarily attenuating fibrinolysis. Elevated levels or activity are associated with increased risk for thrombotic diseases. TAFI/TAFIa also participates in inflammatory processes.
