Carcinoembryonic Antigen (CEA)

Target
CEA
Molecular classification
Glycoprotein, Immunoglobulin superfamily, Cell adhesion molecule
01

Overview

Carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) is a set of highly related glycoproteins primarily involved in cell adhesion. CEA is normally produced in gastrointestinal tissue during fetal development, with production ceasing before birth. In healthy adults, CEA levels are typically very low, but can be elevated in certain cancers and some benign conditions. It is primarily used as a tumor marker for monitoring treatment response and detecting recurrence, but has limitations due to its elevation in non-cancerous conditions.
