Carcinoembryonic antigen-related cell adhesion molecule 18 pseudogene is a nonfunctional segment of DNA that resembles the gene encoding carcinoembryonic antigen-related cell adhesion molecule 18 (CEACAM18), a member of the immunoglobulin superfamily implicated in cell adhesion. This sequence, however, contains disabling mutations or lacks regulatory elements necessary for producing a functional protein, and is thus classified as a pseudogene—a genomic remnant of a once-protein-coding gene[1][2][4]. Pseudogenes such as this may be transcribed at low levels and in rare cases can participate in regulatory activities as noncoding RNAs, but there is no evidence for any functional or pathogenic role for the CEACAM18 pseudogene in humans[1][2][3].
