Cardiac fibroblast differentiation

Molecular classification

Overview

Cardiac fibroblast differentiation is a developmental and pathological process in which precursor cells, typically of epicardial, endocardial, or neural crest origin, become cardiac fibroblasts. This occurs largely through epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT) regulated by various signaling pathways, such as TGFβ, FGF, PDGFRα, and Wnt. These fibroblasts contribute structurally and functionally to the heart during development, participate in extracellular matrix production, and are key mediators of cardiac fibrosis and remodeling following injury.
