Cardiac fibroblast reprogramming is a regenerative medicine strategy that aims to convert resident cardiac fibroblasts into functional cardiomyocyte-like cells (iCMs) to repair damaged myocardium and reduce fibrosis after injuries such as myocardial infarction. This process typically involves introducing defined combinations of cardiac developmental transcription factors and/or small molecules to induce cardiac gene expression and phenotype in fibroblasts.
Conversion of cardiac fibroblasts into cardiomyocyte-like cells through forced expression of transcription factors (e.g., Gata4, Mef2c, Tbx5, Hand2, Myocd, Mesp1) and/or modulation of signaling pathways (e.g., TGF-beta, WNT) to induce cardiac gene expression and function.
