Cardiac Ion-Channel Protein

Molecular classification
Ion channel, Voltage-gated ion channel, Ligand-gated ion channel
01

Overview

Cardiac ion-channel proteins are integral membrane proteins that form pores in the membranes of cardiac cells, allowing selective passage of ions such as sodium (Na⁺), potassium (K⁺), calcium (Ca²⁺), and chloride (Cl⁻). These channels are essential for generating and propagating the cardiac action potential, which underlies the rhythmic contraction and relaxation of heart muscle. Mutations or dysfunctions in cardiac ion-channel genes/proteins can cause arrhythmias due to altered excitability or conduction properties.
