Target intelligence / Profile preview
Cardiac muscle and endothelial cells are the fundamental cellular building blocks of the heart and the circulatory system, working in tandem to maintain hemodynamic stability. Cardiac muscle cells, or cardiomyocytes, are specialized striated muscle cells responsible for the heart's rhythmic contraction and relaxation, a process driven by calcium-induced calcium release (StatPearls, 2023). Endothelial cells form the single-layer lining of all blood vessels, acting as a critical endocrine organ that regulates vascular tone through the release of vasoactive substances like nitric oxide and endothelin-1 (NIH, 2022). This entry is categorized as incorrect because it describes a tissue or cell population rather than a specific molecular entity like a receptor or enzyme. However, these cells are the physiological sites where many cardiovascular drugs exert their effects, such as beta-blockers targeting adrenergic receptors in cardiomyocytes or nitrates affecting the nitric oxide pathway in endothelial cells (PubMed, 2021). Dysfunction in these cell types is a hallmark of major pathologies, including heart failure, hypertension, and atherosclerosis.
Drugs modulate the activity of these cells by targeting specific receptors (e.g., beta-adrenergic receptors), ion channels (e.g., calcium channels), or enzymes (e.g., ACE) to alter cardiac contractility and vascular resistance.
