Cardiolipin

Molecular classification
Phospholipid
01

Overview

Cardiolipin is a unique phospholipid, also known as diphosphatidylglycerol, predominantly found in the inner mitochondrial membrane of eukaryotic cells. It constitutes about 20% of the total lipid composition in this membrane and is especially abundant in tissues with high energy demands such as heart and skeletal muscle. It plays crucial roles in mitochondrial structure, electron transport chain function, and membrane dynamics. As an autoantigen, antibodies against cardiolipin are associated with increased risk of various thrombotic and obstetric complications. Dysfunctional cardiolipin metabolism is implicated in diseases like Barth syndrome.
