Cardiomyocyte regeneration refers to the process by which new cardiomyocytes (heart muscle cells) are generated to replace those lost due to injury, disease, or normal cellular turnover. In healthy adult humans, cardiomyocyte renewal occurs at a low rate—approximately 0.5% per year. Multiple molecular targets exist within developmental signaling networks/cell cycle machinery that could be manipulated therapeutically.
