CarH is a bacterial photoreceptor protein that uses adenosylcobalamin (AdoCbl) as its chromophore. It functions as a light-dependent transcriptional regulator, controlling the biosynthesis of carotenoids in bacteria to protect against photo-oxidative stress. In the dark, CarH binds AdoCbl and forms a homo-tetramer that represses transcription of carotenoid biosynthesis genes. Upon exposure to light, AdoCbl undergoes photolysis, triggering dissociation of the tetramer and allowing gene expression.
