Overview

Cariogenic oral bacteria are a group of microorganisms in the oral cavity, most notably *Streptococcus mutans*, *Streptococcus sobrinus*, and *Lactobacillus* species, that metabolize dietary sugars to produce acids[1][4][5]. These acids reduce local pH and lead to the demineralization of tooth enamel, initiating and promoting dental caries[1][4]. Cariogenic bacteria colonize the tooth surface, form biofilms (dental plaque), and are sustained by frequent carbohydrate intake. Interactions among these microbes, along with certain fungi (e.g., *Candida albicans*), can exacerbate cariogenicity[1][2]. While "Cariogenic oral bacteria" is a functional and clinical concept, it does not constitute a single, structurally defined molecular target for therapeutic intervention. Instead, it is a collective description of a pathogenic microbial community[1][2][3][4][5].
