Overview

Carrier protein-mediated immune activation describes a widely used strategy in vaccine and antibody development wherein poorly immunogenic antigens (like polysaccharides or peptides) are covalently or tightly conjugated to highly immunogenic carrier proteins (such as KLH, BSA, or OVA). This process stimulates a robust immune response, including T-cell activation, isotype switching, and memory formation. The carrier protein allows the antigen to be better processed and presented by antigen-presenting cells, bringing T-cell help to otherwise T-independent or weakly immunogenic antigens[1][2][5][7]. Although carrier proteins are essential tools in immunology, "non-specific immune activation via carrier protein stimulation" is not a single molecular target but rather a descriptive term for a broader mechanism.
