Overview

CARS1 antisense RNA 1 (CARS1-AS1) is a long non-coding RNA gene identified in the human genome. It is classified as an antisense RNA, transcribed from the opposite DNA strand of the CARS1 gene, which encodes the enzyme cysteinyl-tRNA synthetase 1. Antisense RNAs typically regulate the expression of their sense gene partners through chromatin remodeling, transcriptional interference, or post-transcriptional regulation. While antisense RNAs have important modulatory roles in various biological processes including imprinting and chromatin dynamics, direct evidence for disease-relevant function, druggability, or established biomarker status of CARS1-AS1 is currently lacking. Some database associations highlight potential links to neurodevelopmental, hair, and growth disorders, but mechanistic and clinical validation remain open research areas.
