In pathological conditions such as osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis, the microenvironment undergoes a transition to a catabolic state, where inflammatory cytokines and matrix-degrading enzymes like ADAMTS-5 and MMPs disrupt tissue homeostasis (PubMed: 32832510). Therapeutic strategies targeting this environment often focus on intra-articular delivery of visco-supplements, anti-inflammatory agents, or regenerative cells to restore the structural and biochemical integrity of the joint (Frontiers: 10.3389/fbioe.2020.00614). Consequently, the joint microenvironment is viewed as a holistic therapeutic landscape rather than a single molecular target.
