Overview

A cartilage lesion refers to the local damage to cartilage—a specialized connective tissue that lines the surfaces of joints and provides cushioning and smooth movement between bones. Most commonly affecting weight-bearing joints such as the knee and ankle, cartilage lesions can result from acute trauma (e.g., sports injuries, falls), repetitive stress, or degeneration associated with aging and osteoarthritis. Cartilage is avascular, lacks nerves and lymphatic supply, and has limited intrinsic ability to heal, leading to persistent symptoms including pain, swelling, joint stiffness, and decreased range of motion. Severe lesions can result in joint blockage if cartilage fragments break off. Management strategies range from conservative treatment to surgical repair, such as autologous chondrocyte implantation. Cartilage lesions are classified based on their location, severity, and morphological features, but are not therapeutic molecular targets themselves.
