Key anabolic pathways include those activated by growth factors such as transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β), bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs), insulin-like growth factor (IGF), fibroblast growth factors (FGFs), as well as the wnt, nitric oxide (NO), protein kinase C (PKC), and integrin-mediated signals[1][4]. These pathways regulate the expression of extracellular matrix components, including type II collagen, aggrecan, hyaluronan, and chondroitin sulfate[3][4][5]. Disruption or dysregulation of these pathways is implicated in cartilage degeneration seen in disorders such as osteoarthritis[1].
