The phosphoacceptor domain typically contains serine or threonine residues that are recognized and phosphorylated by CK2. This phosphorylation event can regulate various aspects of the substrate protein, including its activity, stability, subcellular localization, and interactions with other molecules. A common consensus sequence for CK2 substrates is S/T-X-X-E/D/pS (where S/T = Ser/Thr; X = any amino acid; E/D = Glu/Asp; pS = phosphorylated Ser). Phosphorylation at these domains can control key cellular processes such as nuclear-cytoplasmic shuttling, cell cycle progression, apoptosis suppression, and signal transduction.
