Casein kinase II subunit alpha (CK2α) is the catalytic subunit of casein kinase 2 (CK2), a highly conserved and ubiquitously expressed serine/threonine protein kinase. CK2 is involved in phosphorylating acidic proteins such as casein and plays a critical role in various cellular processes including cell cycle control, DNA repair, circadian rhythm regulation, and cell survival. Deregulation or overexpression of CK2 has been linked to tumorigenesis. Its anti-apoptotic properties may allow mutated cells to evade programmed cell death pathways contributing to cancer development.
