Overview
Caspase-7 is an executioner caspase that plays a central role in the execution phase of apoptosis, pyroptosis and granzyme-mediated cell death. It exists as an inactive proenzyme that is activated by initiator caspases. While it shares overlapping substrate specificity with caspase-3, it also performs distinct non-redundant functions in apoptosis and inflammation. Caspase-7 represents a potential therapeutic target for diseases involving dysregulated apoptosis or inflammation.
